In early 2025, Taproot Agro Allied Ltd participated in a landmark agricultural pilot project in Okumi, Lokoja, Kogi State — a project sponsored by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kogi State. The project focused on the cultivation of FARO 59, a high-yield upland rice variety developed to thrive in Nigerian conditions.
What is FARO 59? FARO 59 is an improved upland rice variety released by the Nigerian agricultural research system. It is known for its relatively short growing cycle, good grain quality, and adaptability to a range of soil types found across Nigeria’s middle belt and savanna regions. For smallholder farmers, it represents a significant opportunity to increase rice production without requiring irrigated lowland conditions.
Taproot’s Role in the Project Taproot Agro Allied provided agrochemical support for the project, supplying eco-friendly products designed to boost yields while protecting soil health. The project brought together farmers, agricultural extension workers, and government stakeholders in a collaborative effort to demonstrate modern, sustainable farming practices at scale.
What the Project Demonstrated The pilot project illustrated several important points about the future of Nigerian agriculture. First, that eco-friendly agrochemicals can perform competitively alongside conventional alternatives when properly applied. Second, that government-backed agricultural initiatives, when combined with private sector expertise, can create meaningful impact for farming communities. Third, that upland rice cultivation in Kogi State holds significant untapped potential for food security and economic development.
Looking Forward Projects like the FARO 59 pilot represent exactly the kind of public-private collaboration that Nigerian agriculture needs more of. Taproot Agro Allied remains committed to supporting farmers across Nigeria with products and expertise that drive sustainable productivity — and we look forward to participating in more initiatives that put Nigerian farmers first.
